Simplifying everyday banking

To reflect their mission of forward banking, we transformed Tangerine’s banking experience into a powerful and friendly digital financial ecosystem to help Canadians make smart decisions with their money and meet their banking goals.

Setting context

Tangerine needed help evolving their platforms, elevating and expanding their brand, and developing a suite of innovative digital banking features to set them apart as a bank that empowers people to take charge of their financial future, every day.

While this collaboration spanned across many years, I joined the project for six months to help their design team organize around a cohesive design system and evolve product features.

In my first two weeks on the project, I interviewed designers and developers on the Tangerine team to understand their struggles with using the current design system, areas to improve and evolve the design system based on their aspirations, and ways to make onboarding to the design system easier and more engaging for new team members.

Based on these interviews, I created a roadmap with actionable ideas to evolve design system framing—to enable innovation rather than constrain it—and suggestions on how to amplify storytelling to assist learning.

Evolving the design system

Together, we expanded guidelines for implementing new features, products, and components within the design system to support more efficient team collaboration and future platform scalability and expansion.

Designing unique product experiences

Because Tangerine is a direct bank, and they don’t have brick-and-mortar locations, the onboarding process to sign up for an account is complex in order to verify identities. Remaining true to Tangerine’s brand—banking made easy—I simplified the onboarding experience to be as few steps as possible and evolved the content and design to be clear and conversational.

Impact

During my time working with Tangerine, I helped their design team launch a new methodology for rapid user-testing, a structure to share back what we learned, designed and documented two major product experiences, and helped expand the Tangerine design system.
